deduction for cme

Hello

I get continual medical education done as part of my job as a physician. My employer told me that the CME reimbursement is not taxed as an income. On the paystub, I noticed that the CME reimbursement is indeed not calculated as part of the federal income under taxable income however it is counted under Medicare income that is taxed. In this case, would I still be able to deduct CME reimbursement when I do my annual tax filing?

Thank you

Elisabeth

No, you can’t deduct it. You already received a deduction by not having it taxed as income. As an aside, because of recent tax law, you couldn’t deduct it even if you paid with post tax dollars since you are an employee.
