Claiming self as a deduction-can this be done?

Each taxpayer can claim a personal exemption for him/herself.

When you first begin the tax return and are entering your personal information into TurboTax, you'll be asked Can anyone claim you as a dependent on their tax return? As long as you answer "no" to this question, TurboTax will automatically give you the personal exemption.
