Yes, surgery for removal of appendix and the emergency room visit would qualify as medical expenses.

These medical expenses would be deductible in the amount that exceeds 7.5% your adjusted gross income.

Yes. I should have mentioned that the amount of expenses deductible is what is not reimbursed by insurance.
