Can I take the home office deduction if I work from home for my second job?

I work two jobs: one as a full time RN, and the other as a part time analyst for a financial intelligence firm. I live in a different city than where the intelligence firm's office is located, and work remotely from home on my personal computer. Can I claim the home office deduction for this situation?

Can I take the home office deduction if I work from home for my second job?

Yes, you may claim a Home Office Deduction for the part-time analyst job. TurboTax will ask you how much of your income is from this job, to get a ratio of when compared to our RN. This ratio is used to calculate what percentage of your home expenses can be allocated to your part-time analyst job.


To enter the employee home office deduction:
  1. Open your return, if you haven't already done so.
  2. Inside TurboTax, search for home office, employee (use this exact phrase, including the comma and space) and then click the "Jump to" link in the search results.
  3. Enter your occupation and proceed.
  4. When you get to the Did you have home office expenses? screen, answer Yes and continue.

We'll ask a series of questions about your home office size, usage, etc. to determine if you qualify for the deduction and for how much.
