Can I deduct church (or other religious) dues/fees?

If I pay fees to a religious organization like membership dues, or fees to attend worship services or community events, are these deductible if they are to a recognized religious institution?

Are they recognized by the IRS a charity?  I've never heard of a fee to attend a religious service.
