Can I claim my motorcycle vehicle registration fees in Michigan?

The total amount of your registration fee is not deductible but the portion that the state charged you for taxes based on the value of your vehicle is. If you need help finding this on your bill, contact your state's Department of Motor Vehicles. You can see below if your state's taxes are deductible.

Which states charge taxes based on vehicle value?

Below is a list of states that charge a tax based on the vehicle’s value:
  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Georgia
  • Iowa
  • Indiana
  • Kentucky
  • Louisiana
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • Minnesota
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • Montana
  • Nebraska
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire
  • South Carolina
  • Washington
  • Wyoming
What if my state isn’t on the list?
  • If your vehicle is registered in a state that’s not listed, then your fees are not deductible.
  • If you live in a state that doesn't tax the value of your car, but you paid car registration fees in a state that does, you may be able to get this deduction. Just enter the amount you paid on the Vehicle Registration Fees screen.

How do I get this deduction?

  • If you itemize your deductions, then you can take the vehicle registration fee deduction.
  • What’s deductible? The taxes that a state charges each year based on the value of the vehicle. You'll find this amount on your annual registration bill, and you’ll enter it on the Vehicle Registration Fees screen.
