You may be able to claim an energy credit for your gas combi boiler if it meets the technical efficiency standards, see below. It sounds like you have already been told it qualifies. Most of the energy credits had expired until Congress has passed the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018 which has become a law. Included in this is the extension of expired tax extenders for 2017, the extension of energy efficient tax credits, and special tax relief for certain disaster victims.
Equipment and materials can qualify for the Nonbusiness Energy Property Credit only if they meet technical efficiency standards set by the Department of Energy. The manufacturer can tell you whether a particular item meets those standards.
You can claim a tax credit for 10% of the cost of qualified energy efficiency improvements and 100% of residential energy property costs. However, significant limits apply:
