Can I claim energy tax credit if I purchased a pellet stove for the house I live in if my Fiance is the owner?

We both live in the home but he is the owner and I purchased the pellet stove.

No, if you are not the homeowner, you cannot claim the residential energy credit for homeowners. In order to claim the credit, you must be the homeowner.

Use the following steps to go to the correct section of TurboTax to enter the cost of your biomass fuel stove:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “energy improvements” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to energy improvements
  • Click on the blue “Jump to energy improvements” link

Go through the questions in this section until you reach a screen titled, 'Enter Any Additional Energy-Efficient Improvements'.  Then, enter your cost beside the Biomass Fuel Property line of information.
