AFS Encapsulation System As A Deduction

We purchased a AFS Foundation & Waterproofing system. Below is the description of the system. The system also allows the heat in our home not to escape through the floors. Can we use this as a deduction in the Energy-Saving Improvement section of TurboTax ?

AFS Encapsulation System As A Deduction

Possibly.  According to the Government's Energy Star site (here:(

Typical bulk insulation products can qualify, such as batts, rolls, blow-in fibers, rigid boards, expanding spray, and pour-in-place.

Products that air seal (reduce air leaks) can also qualify, as long as they come with a Manufacturers Certification Statement, including:

  • Weather stripping
  • Spray foam in a can, designed to air seal
  • Caulk designed to air seal
  • House wrap

Additionally, you might also have or get a manufacturers certification statement for the "Thermal insulation board".

Manufacturer’s Certification Statement
is a signed statement from the manufacturer certifying that the product or component qualifies for the tax credit. The IRS encourages manufacturers to provide these Certifications on their website to facilitate identification of qualified products. Taxpayers must keep a copy of the certification statement for their records, but do not have to submit a copy with their tax return.

Keep in mind only the cost of materials can be used for the credit; no installation, assembly or preparation costs can be used.

Checking with AFS for Manufacturer Certification Statement. I'll get back to you.

AFS Encapsulation System As A Deduction

The response I've gotten so far is they do not that (Manufacturers Certification Statement'). I've asked the sales representative to make sure that manager closely read the article you provided. The AFS Encapsulation System does provide a warranty with the materials (labor, insulation, and sealing), so I'll see what their response will be. Any suggestions if they respond with the same answer ?
