Adult Dependent

My son is 25, not a student, and earned less than $4000 last year. I have supported him most of the year. Can I claim him as a dependent?

Adult Dependent

If you provided more than half of his financial support, yes, you can claim him as a qualifying relative (but not a qualifying child).   Who can I claim as my dependent?

Sounds like he fits the criteria to be claimed as your qualified relative.  You will get the $500 credit for other dependents for claiming him.   If he files a tax return himself---to seek a refund of any tax withheld, he needs to say on his own return that he can be claimed as someone else's dependent.

Qualifying relative

  • They don't have to be related to you (despite the name).
  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They lived with you the entire year (exceptions apply).
  • They made less than $4,700 in 2023.
  • You provided more than half of their financial support
