Adoption Expenses layover

Hello, our adoption was finalized in 2015. We claimed the maximum allowable portion of the expenses on our 2015 return, while some remaining expenses balance was to be added to this year's return. How do we go about entering this information? Thank you!

Adoption Expenses layover

The adoption credit allows for $13,460 per child for 2016.  However, since you paid the expenses in 2015, you may not have any amounts available for 2016.  You stated that you claimed the maximum amount allowable for 2015 - but was that limited by income, by taxes, or did you take the full amount of credit.

If you took the full $13,400 (Maximum for 2015) in 2015, and you didn't pay any further expense in 2016, then you cannot claim any further credit.

If you have an adoption credit carryover, from credit amounts that weren't allowed on your 2015 return due to less income tax than credit, TurboTax carries this amount forward automatically.

But you can go to Deductions and Credits under Federal Taxes, scroll to You and Your Family, and click the button beside  Adoption Credit.  Work through the screens.  Once you have gotten through to the Adoption Expenses Summary, the next page will give you the Adoption Credit Carryforwards(See Screenshot below)

If the carryforward amount is not there, you can enter it on this screen.
