For 2018 taxes, can I deduct APL payments made to the (then) estranged spouse, the same way Alimony could still be deducted in 2018?

You can deduct alimony paid to a former spouse as long the divorce or separation agreement is executed by December 31, 2018.

Assuming that APL means Alimony Pendente Lite, then it is deductible as long as it was ordered by the court, and the court order was dated before 12/31/2018. Voluntary payments (not ordered by a court) are and were not deductible.
