Dear Tax Expert,
I thought I paid off my 2008 home buyer credit when I did my 2016 taxes. This is because at the time it was not my primary residence, I rented it out that year. I ran into this problem last year too, 2017. I called the my bank who holds my mortgage and they confirmed that my credit was paid off. However, the filing of my taxes is begin rejected because of the 2008 home buyer credit. Its stating that I need to make a payment. How can I find out how much the government is now expecting me to pay. What is the governments record of my credit paid and credit owed?
Thank you,
Elizabeth Marshall

You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
Look up your account on this with the IRS at https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/individuals/first-time-homebuyer-credit-account-look-up
You'll want to look at the copy of your 2016 tax return and see if the payoff was included on Line 60 (I think that's the right line).
Your mortgage company wouldn't have knowledge of this, it doesn't go through them, it would have been reported and paid on your 2016 tax return.
