Have a 2 questions about a 1098-T for my son. In box 1 has payments received for tuition and related expenses. This amt is about $2500 more than what his grant covers, which I paid. This amount is what I would like to claim on an AOTC. In box 5, his scholarship/grants equal approx. $17.5 more than his payments received in box 1. This is due to his compensation for being an Assistant Residence Director. He doesn't have any overpayment on scholorships or grants. Can I put the actual amount of his tuition grant in box 5 as this directly relates to his tuition instead of the total amount which includes his other compensation? Also, the second question would be is his compensation for his job on campus taxable on his return? Article 525 seems to say that if he's required to stay on campus, lodging should not be taxable as well as his food which he gets from the cafeteria.
Thank for any help!

No, you will report the amount on Box 5 as it is reported on the 1098T. if that box is blank, leave it blank. As far as the second question, is the amount of food and lodging being included in the scholarship amounts? if so and if he lives on campus, report it as an expense against the scholarship to reduce his taxable income. Here is how to report it.
Thank you, I was able to enter the information regarding tuition paid - didn't impact my taxes regardless
