1095-a enter partial year

I received a 1095-A  and received tax credits for a partial year. Can I enter the months I did not receive tax credits as medical insurance premiums I paid for out-of-pocket? My 1095-A has $0.0 listed for those months.

No. You have to enter the information listed on your form 1095-A . For the months you were not covered by the Marketplace policy, just leave the boxes blank on the entry screen of form 1095-A. Do not enter 0.

As for the other health insurance premiums you paid out-of-pocket, you can deduct them along with the net premiums you paid for the Marketplace policy and all other medical and dental bills and prescription drugs paid out-of-pocket as Medical Expenses in Schedule A - Itemized Deductions

When you leave it blank, the Turbo Tax software prompts you with the message, " Must be greater than $0"

It does not matter if you put 0 or leave it blank, you get the same message....

If you received a Form 1095-A, then you should enter it on your return.

Here's how to enter your 1095-A in TurboTax:

  1. Open or continue your return.
  2. Navigate to the 1095-A section:
    • TurboTax Online/Mobile: Go to 1095-A.
    • TurboTax Desktop: Search for 1095-a, then select the Jump to link.
  3. Answer Yes and enter your 1095-A info on the next screen.
    • We don't need all the info from your 1095-A. We'll only ask about the info that affects your return.

If the Jump function doesn't work, go to Deductions and Credits and select Affordable Care Act (Form 1095-A) to enter the form.

If you didn't have Marketplace insurance all year, you can leave column A blank for the months you didn't have it. Then columns B & C will not be an issue.

If you have an amount in column A, then the amount in column B can't be zero. You must enter the Second Lowest Cost Silver Plan (SLCSP). The SLCSP is the second-lowest priced health insurance plan in the Silver category that was available when you applied for insurance at Healthcare Marketplace.

You can use the Health coverage tax tool to figure to get the SLCSP if it is not on your Form 1095-A.

The amount in column C can be zero if you didn't take a monthly subsidy to help pay for your health insurance premiums.

  • If you did get a monthly subsidy to help pay for your health insurance premiums, enter the monthly amount in column C.

See this article for more information about the Premium Tax Credit.

TurboTax will automatically fill out Form 8962 once you enter your Form 1095-A.
