The 2024 standard deduction for married filing jointly is $29,200 plus an additional $1,550 for each spouse that is 65 and older or blind. A married filing joint return with both spouses at least 65 and blind would have a standard deduction of $35,400.
The difference between your standard deduction and the base standard deduction is $3,100 which means TurboTax is calculating two additional standard deductions. If you are both at least 65, both blind, or one at least 65 and one blind, then your standard deduction is correct.
If the additional standard deduction doesn't apply to you, check to make sure:
- the age of both you and your spouse have been entered correctly and
- the I was considered legally blind as of December 31, 2024 box on the Let's check for some other situations screen is not checked for either you or your spouse.
On the personal profile screen, click Edit on the summary of your personal details. Double check your year of birth on the first screen and click Continue. Click Continue on the screen requesting your Social Security number. On the next screen, Let's check for some other situations, the I was considered legally blind as of December 31, 2024 box should be unchecked.

OK...We are both over 65 but not blind so my math says $29,200 + 3100 = $32,300.00 which is what my post said. So, now I get it.
I'm surprised this wasn't made clear on the tax forms but I'm good with that! Thanks for the Pub reference. I'm now ready to file!
