In TurboTax, as a resident taxpayer and firefighter, you are allowed certain subtractions on your Maryland return if they applty to you.  When you are completing your Maryland return in TurboTax you will see a screen called Let's see how Maryland taxes income.  The next screen is the income that Maryland handles differently.  You will find the below listed firefighter exceptions on this screen.

Payments from a pension system to firemen and policemen for job-related injuries or disabilities (but not more than the amount of such payments included in your total income)

Payment received under a fire, rescue, or ambulance personnel length of service award program that is funded by any county or municipal corporation of the State.

A Maryland fireman is allowed to deduct the amount added to his taxable income for the use of an official vehicle if he is a member of a state, county or local fire department. This amount will be stated separately on his W-2 form.

Travel expenses incurred for use of a fireman's personal vehicle can be deducted if they meet two tests: The fireman must be serving a volunteer fire company, and he must not have been reimbursed for the expenses from another source. In order to claim this deduction, the fireman must attach a completed Maryland Form 502V -- Use of Vehicle for Charitable Purposes.

Maryland volunteer firefighters who are certified by a Maryland fire, police, rescue or emergency medical services organization are entitled to receive $3,500 from The Honorable Louis L. Goldstein Volunteer Police, Fire, Rescue and Emergency Medical Services Personnel Subtraction Modification Program. This $3,500 is deductible from Maryland income taxes.

I have a Maryland Income Tax Subtraction Modification of up to $5,000.00 this year.   Where do I apply it on the Maryland Form?

When you go back through your Maryland return follow these steps:

  • Edit the Income section.
  • Scroll down to the Public Service category.
  • Click Start or Update beside Fire, Rescue or Emergency Medical Services Volunteer Work or Length of Service Awards to enter your information.

The form, 505SU, is available to be e-filed on 2/10/22. Therefore, you can e-file your form when it is ready with your regular Maryland return.
