What do I do to file a non-resident return first before the resident return?

The first thing you need to do is to make sure you've filled out the About me or Personal Info section correctly. Using TurboTax Online/Mobile:

1. Go to the Personal profile screen, scroll down to Other State Income, and select Edit.
2. On the Did you make money in any other states? question, answer Yes and make sure your nonresident state(s) are selected from the drop-down.
3. Select Continue to return to the Personal profile screen.

After you finish your federal return, you'll automatically move to the State taxes section, where you'll see your nonresident state(s) listed in addition to your resident state. Always begin with the nonresident return first.
