We live in NY, our son goes to college in IL

Hi, we live in New York, and our son goes to college in Illinois. He has two part time jobs there while at school. He also had a job at home during the summer. I have prepared his taxes using Turbotax. It wants me to pay $45 to even start his state return for Illinois. E-file in NY is free, so why doesn't the Turbotax software allow me to use the one free e-file that it comes with for his IL return?

I tried to use mytax.illinois.gov but you can't use it without an IL license, which he does not have.

Also, I entered his 3 W2s, and when I went to state return for NY, TurboTax included all 3 W2s for the New York return, even though two were for Illinois. I am really stumped on what to do.

New York uses the total income to determine the tax rate then applies it to the New York state income only.  See Page 2 for the IT-203.

Our Grand daughter lives in NY and goes to college in South Carolina where we live. All her income for 2019 was earned in SC but when we did her taxes she gets a refund from NY but her W2 shows all income earned  was in SC where no payments were made.  Who gets the state taxes NY or SC?

You would need to file two state returns:

  • One as a SC non-resident
  • One as a NY resident
  • Prepare her SC non-resident return before preparing her NY resident return
  • She may receive a refund in one state and owe taxes in the other state. You would need to prepare both state returns to see.
  • Normally these amounts may offset.
