W2 lists only one state but I lived in two states

For the 2025 tax year, I lived in Virginia for 9 months (Jan-Sept), and Washington DC (my current address) for 3 months (Oct-Dec).  I worked for the same employer during the entire year.  However, my W2 only lists Virginia in in the state information boxes 15-17.  The Virginia state wages in box 16 are the same as my total wages shown in box 1 (so witholding taxes were only paid to Virgnia and nothing was paid to Washington DC).

I don't know how to go forward with this, do I somehow fix on the federal forms, or try to fix on the state forms? I did try on the state forms, but I must have done something wrong because I can't get them to state I was (am) a part-year resident for both states.  thanks.

You can indicate in the Personal Info section that you moved during 2025 or you can indicate in each state Virginia and DC that you need to change your state residency.

You will have to allocate the wages based on where you were a resident when you earned them.  Because your employer withheld for Virginia all year, you should get a refund but will owe DC.  If you have not already done so, make sure you request your employer withhold DC taxes if they do so you do not have to file a nonresident Virginia return.  (Virginia and DC have a reciprocal agreement so you can file and pay taxes to your resident state only so you do not have to file two state tax returns.)
