Virginia State Taxes 2019- SCH OSC: State Code not valid for this credit

The other state is CA

I am Virginia resident, I sold property in CA in 2019.

Turbotax asked me questions during the interview process to establish the credit for Taxes Paid to another state, but during final review gave me the "Check this Entry" error.  How do I correct this?

Thanks

Harold

The credit will need to be claimed on the nonresident California return instead of on the resident Virginia return in this situation.

Go back into your Virginia state interview section.

  1. Select Edit under the Credits section
  2. The next page should be Credit for Tax Paid to Other States Summary.  Go ahead and select Delete to the right of the CA copy.
  3. Then go back into the California state summary.
  4. Select Edit under the Credits section in California.
  5. Select Edit or Add to report the amount of income and taxes paid in Virginia for the California sale of property taxed in Virginia.

This should remove the error for the Out of State tax credit in Virginia and ensure you are only taxed on the income one time.

Thanks.  This is where I get confused:

Select Edit or Add to report the amount of income and taxes paid in Virginia for the California sale of property taxed in Virginia"

I do not know how to figure how much taxes were paid in VA on just the sale of the property?  The full amount of my earnings plus the gain from the sale are transferred from my federal return to the VA state return, and the VA state return calculates the taxes owed.   I am not clear on how I would separate the taxes specific to the sale?  Maybe I am not seeing this clearly, and need to take a break?  Been at this most of the day!
