I have completed my Federal returns and submitted them. I am trying to file my Virginia state but it won’t allow me using the directions on mock filing separate. And for my spouse i don’t need state since his income is in Florida.
When attempting it says I have to file my federal first and doesn’t account for the fact I already filed my federal. PLease assist on how to mitigate the issue i am running into. Thanks.

indicate in the mock return that you will file your federal by mail and then indicate you will file your Va return by efile. See if this works.
This is the screen I am presented with:
When selected e-file from this screen, I am presented with 2 options:
1) e-file my federal return now
2) do not e-file my federal return now, I'll do it later
[same options for state]
When I select option 2) on federal, it does not let me file my state return because it says e-file of federal must take place first.
When selecting file by mail from the screen above, the 2 options are:
1) Print my federal to return by mail now
2) do not print my federal return to file by mail now
[same options for state]
Please advise as to what to do, because I don't see a combination of your suggesstion from previous comment available, and I would like to e-file my state (Virginia) return.
Thanks.
Unfortunately, you must e-file your federal return if you want to e-file your state return. You cannot just e-file your state return.
Can I e-file my state return before my federal
Hi there,
if you see my initial comment, I filed my federal with MFJ status. When I got to state, because my spouse is in FL and doesn’t have state, I was redirected to TurboTax link on steps to mock MFS for my state return in Virginia.
That’s what I’ve completed but when trying to file with e-file it doesn’t let me because it doesn’t link that I’ve already filed my federal. I need assistance with that process.
You can only mail in your state return.
Since you created a mock federal return to generate the state return as married filing separately, it is not linked to that married filing jointly federal return that was electronically filed. Therefore, you would need to mail in your Virginia return.
How to File MFJ for Federal but separately for state
Thank you for that information.
Where can I find the form for mailing it in?
It sounds like you want the address to mail your return to.
You can mail your VA return to the following address as applicable to your return.
Please make sure you use the correct address depending upon if you have a refund or if you are getting a refund to ensure there are no delays in processing your return.
