In 2024, I was a part-year resident of Maryland and New Hampshire, so I have to file tax returns in both states. There are two issues with TT's preparation of the NH Form DP-10 "Interest and Dividends Tax Return":
1. I had dividend income from tax-exempt (muni) mutual funds, all of which is not taxable at the federal level. In TT, I entered the breakdown of that income by state (MD and NH) and US territory. The portion of that income derived from NH and US territory obligations is NOT taxable by NH.
Yet when TT automatically prepared the NH Form DP-10, in Step 3 Line 1 it included the entire federal tax-exempt income from this source. Then in Step 3 Line 4 it only created entries for income from US obligations (which is also not taxable by NH and identified by a "reason code" 1), but not for the portion of income from muni funds that is not taxable by NH. There is no way to exclude the latter by creating two new entries, one for income from NH muni bonds and the other for income from the US territories.
(In contrast, on the 2024 Maryland Form 502 TT correctly used the breakdown of the muni fund income I entered to calculate the amount taxable by that state.) So this is the first bug in TT's preparation of the NH Form DP-10.
2. Another issue is that in the NH Form DP-10 Step 3 Line 4, TT unnecessarity created entries with zero amounts. Then TT informs me that because of the number of entries in that line exceeds 5, it cannot file my NH tax return electronically. There are 6 entries in that line, but 2 of them are zero and cannot be deleted. So the second bug is that there is no way to remove the unnecessary zero-amount entries to be able to file the NH return electronically.
[Update 3/9/2025]
Despite 835+ views of my post, there was not a single reply from TT reps or "experts." Given that NH owes me a refund, I could not wait any longer and, based on what other TT users documented on related discussion threads, I filed my NH tax return for free using the state's Granite Tax Connect online facility. Therefore, I expect Intuit to refund the $45 (minus a $10 "credit") I paid for the additional state return support which I had to purchase.
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
If you'd like, we can look at your return and see exactly what you see to help come to a resolution. The return will be scrubbed and won't include any of your personal details.
If you're using TurboTax Online:
Once you're logged in to your account,
- on the left hand panel, click on Tax Tools and then choose Tools
- on the pop up window, select Share my file with Agent
- you'll see a message saying you'll give us a copy of your tax return. Your personal information will be changed so we can't see any private information.
- click okay and you'll get another message with a token
If you're using TurboTax Desktop:
Please reply to this message with your token so that we can further assist you. Let us know all other states, if any, that are included on the return.
There is no way I would ever "send my file to agent" even it it were "scrubbed." You can easily replicate the issues I reported by creating your own mock return. In fact, there are plenty of unresolved issues with TT's handling of NH Form DP-10 that are well documented in other discussion threads, e.g. this one.
In addition, there is bug in special handling of interest by select states. The screen lists 6 states (ME, MD, MA, NH, NJ and VW), of which I need to select both MD and NH since I was a part-year resident in each of those 2 states. But there is no way to select more than 1 state:
A related issue is that when "Learn more" is clicked, only 5 of those 6 states are listed (NH is missing):
Why?
I 100% second that. Why is NH listed and then in the learn more it doesn’t list NH?
also- there’s no way to get rid of the extra rows created in the DP-10? It constantly says fix error and I have to fill out reason codes, payor ID and non taxable amount.
I only need one line item but it creates 5 line items because it pulls from the federal.
Is there a way to delete the unnecessary lines?
I even tried hitting skip or putting in zeros and it still shows up and counts toward the 5 max which I’m at 5 but the error code says you have more than 5 so you can’t efile. 5 vs more than 5 language is different . I suggest TT change that to say 5 or more if that is truly the case.
And are we supposed to select the my state if we are in fully time resident in NH or not?
I tried both checking and unchecking the box on all the on just my one t-bill one and it gives me drastic differences on what I owe.
PLEASE HELP!
I would like to take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the directions below:
TurboTax Online:
TurboTax Desktop/Download Versions:
*(If using a MAC, go to the menu at the top of the screen, select Help, then, “Send Tax File to Agent”)
AGAIN (see my earlier post), there is NO WAY I would ever share a copy of my tax return even if it had "all of my personal information removed." There is no way to determine what is actually scrubbed from this transmitted file or if the file could still be associated with the Intuit/TT user accounts that contain personal identification.
You can easily reproduce the issues reported by creating your own mock return. Many other users keep complaining about TT's handling of NH Form DP-10, so these issues are prevalent and Intuit has not addressed them for years.
In the meantime, I already filed my NH return using the state's free online form. I expect Intuit to refund me the additional cost of the second state return since what TT prepared was neither correct nor electronically fileable for bogus reasons. Let me know how you want to go about it.
"You can request a refund for TurboTax Desktop products using the form below. Only purchases made directly through TurboTax (including TurboTax Advantage) or through one of our authorized retailers/resellers qualify for our 60-day money-back guarantee."
I bought TT from Costco on 1/15/2025 which was 63 days ago, so the refund can no longer be issued that way. I requested a refund through this forum earlier, but no one responded in time.
Unfortunately, no one of the forum can refund your program cost. You can contact customer service directly at 800-446-8848. We're currently open 5 AM to 9 PM PT every day.
