Tax liability

Hi,  I'm a retired U.S. Customs Inspector.  I have seen that I owe $791.00 in N.Y. State income tax.  I've used Turbo Tax for the last few years and never had to Pay State and Local Taxes.  In fact I have gotten a tax refund for at least two years.

    It depends.

    • Were you eligible for a tax credit last year that didn't apply this year
    • Did you have another source of income this year which wasn't there last year?
    • Did you change your withholdings?
    • Did you have higher deductions last year than this year?

I would recommend reviewing items you had input into your return last year to ensure you are not missing a deduction that you had reported in the past but may not have entered into your return this year.

I actually figured it out myself.  I didn't indicate my 1099R from OPM was from  US Government employment and also the health insurance premiums withheld  Once I corrected this the return changed and showed a refund from both the IRS and NY State.  I printed and mailed the new returns yesterday with a covering letter explaining my mistakes.  Since I already stupidly E-Mailed my incorrect returns I hope they will understand and process my returns.  Any thoughts?

if you emailed your original returns and they were accepted by the federal and state, you should have filed an amended return. It sounds to me like you may have filed and mailed the original return.  if this is what you did, you are going to need to go back into your return, REMOVE the 1099R to bring the return back to its original filing.  Then amend your Turbo Tax and then report the 1099R.  To amend:

    1. ign in to TurboTax.
    2. Scroll down to Your tax return & documents (you may need to select Show), select 2019 and then Amend (change) return.
    3. Select Amend using TurboTax Online.
    4. Carefully follow the instructions. Don't worry if your refund changes to $0. This is normal on amended returns.
    5. When finished, we'll give you instructions for printing and mailing your amended return as amendments can't be e-filed.
