Hello,
I work for a non profit located in Vermont and as of August, used to be a NH resident. Due to owing the state of VT tax money last year, I allocated additional taxes to be taken from my paycheck. When I moved to New York at the end of August I did the same. According to TurboTax I owe the state of New York upward of $2000. How and why?? During my time with my company I worked remotely in NY and in person in Vermont

Yes, that will work! @Rwaugh
Because you moved to New York in August, you were a Part-Year resident. A Part-Year resident is taxed on income earned while a state resident- in the New York state section, you must allocate how much of the wages were earned while you were a New York resident. Go back through the New York tax section and make sure you indicated the allocation correctly. (You have to calculate this because your W2 should show your total wages as state wages in Box 16).
Hi Mark - thanks for your reply. I have two states in box 16- both VT and NY with Vermont having a lower state wages number listed and higher income tax than that of NY (which mimics my overall income in box 1). Can I calculate my NY state income by subtracting the box 16 VT value from my overall wages?
Yes, that will work! @Rwaugh
Hi. Connected with a tax expert while doing my taxes, they told me my W2 was likely not completed correctly. I brought that up to my finance administrator - this is what I was told. Please advise further as to how to possibly do this as I’m being told 3 separate things from 3 separate individuals
Sorry that’s the part I found. This is the part I was sent directly ——
Your W-2 is correct if your NYS wages on Line 16 equal Line 1, even if some of your wages were earned elsewhere. Please enter your W-2 as it shows on your form.
When completing your NY part-year resident return, you have to allocate the appropriate amount of wages. Please see How to enter New York State income as a part-year resident or a non-resident of New York State with ... for instructions on completing your return.
