Mother (deceased) lived in Alabama where probate was opened. I'm the executor (resident of South Carolina). I've completed the Federal 1041. What state/form should be used for filing taxes for the estate (not the individual decedent; that was done last year). Thanks!

You would not have to file a state estate tax unless there was property located in another state that has an estate tax. There are only eleven states and DC that have estate tax: Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington and Washington, D.C. You would file an estate tax (if required) in the state of decedent or any state where property held by the estate is located.
Thank you. The estate does not meet the Alabama threshold for estate tax, so I'm good. Thanks again!
