@SundayInSalem - just one point....the option chosen is not the 'default'..... it's the option that gives the taxpayer the better tax benefit - Turbo Tax figures that out in the background.... I kinda agree with you - did the auditor inadvertantly change the outcome? 

software will do the same thing every single time; a human (e.g. the auditor) is prone to error.

@NCperson Good point about the best result. In the audit I'm referring to, the result was more tax due so the return had to be amended back to part-year filing as a nonresident. I never did hear back as to why the filing status was changed since it was unrelated to the issue being audited., i.e. the change (I think it was unreported income) could have been made without changing the filing status.
