In past years, I've filed State taxes in California, but I no longer live there and I don't need to file state taxes in Washington where I live now. I've searched on how to remove a state, but all of the directions are for removing a state from a specific tax return, not from the software downloaded to my computer. I don't have California in any tax return files (TurboTax correctly sees that I don't need to file a state return anywhere), but since I've used it in past versions, every weekly software update downloads updates for California. This takes time and is annoying.
How can I stop TurboTax from doing this?

It's annoying, but no real way to stop it.
One year I had 3 non-used states that downloaded and updated because I had used them "sometime" in the past.
I never got rid of them until I moved to a new computer, and re-installed programs for the past 3 yrs of TTX software. Since none of those 3 yrs had actually used another state on the new computer, they never showed up again.
I "think" someone finally found a way by messing around deleting certain files in the TTX program directories....but it was a bit convoluted, and not sure it wasn't just temporary.

This is not helpful. Per step 2, "This won't delete your state program, just the state tax return". This is the opposite of what I'm trying to achieve. I don't have any state tax returns (and thus the Remove State menu option is disabled). I'm trying to remove the state program/download so that it doesn't download updates for it every time I start the program. This takes/wastes a lot of time.
