Our NYS tax return was simple-Wages from W-2 form--Standard deduction, NYS tax paid from W-2 form, overpayment amount- Refund amount. Why does it require further review?

Refund status went from "received/accepted" to "processing" to "received and requires further review".   The NYS  refund status site says that when that occurs (after possibly a digital sign of fraud)  it requires manual review, which may take several months to process.   We were counting on this nominal amount and NYS says until the status says "processing" again- no information by any means is available.   Knowing fully well that there is NOTHING to review as it is simple subtraction- We are frustrated, angry and want to know what we can do to speed up a return that has absolutely NO reason to be reviewed!!!!!

TurboTax gets no information at all after you file your tax return.   TT does not hear anything from the IRS or your state, so no one at TurboTax knows that your return is under review or why.   Sometimes a return goes under review for a reason triggered by something on the return; sometimes reviews are random.    No one at TT can speed up the state to process your return for you.  Sorry, but only the state is in control, and only the state can decide when they are ready to issue your refund.  If the state requests any further information from you, provide it as soon as possible.  Otherwise, you just have to be patient while the return is reviewed by the state.

One possibility is that the state did not receive the employer's copy of the W-2(s), or perhaps not the monies themselves.  Or someone else claimed the same dependent as you did.  Going forward, you change your withholding so that you do not have to wait for a refund at tax time.
