I need help with finding how how Turbo Tax is entering the NY Real Property Tax Relief credit on my tax return documents.
I enter all the information and I qualify for a credit of $287, however Turbo Tax reduces my NY state return by $17 rather than increasing by $287. I believe its being processed incorrectly as when I use a different software my return clearly increased by $287. Even doing all the paper work manually my return increases. Is there a method to see when all these numbers are being put in the IT-201
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
I am having the same exact issue! I had an accountant look at it for me and everything is entered correctly but it is just not populating the credit on the turbo tax end
I’ve spoke to turbo tax expert twice and they can’t figure it out. I’m just waiting to see if they update the software.
.It depends. Read over this document from the NY gov website regarding the Real property tax credit to see if you qualify.
Hi, this is a different credit than the real property tax relief credit. The one I am having an issue with is here
You are entitled to this refundable credit if you meet all of the following requirements for the tax year:
Yes, but the only way to view your tax forms to see the calculations is to pay for the Turbo Tax Online program. Once you you are able to see the forms. You need to view the IT 229 first to see if you received the full amount of the credit. Then look at your payments and refundable credits on lines 63-75 on the IT 201 to see how your credits are applied, including the amount on line 71 which represents the amount of your Real property tax relief credit.
Also you might contact a tax support agent at Intuit at 800-446-8848 to see if they can retrieve a diagnostic on your return and then go over the numbers with you if you didn't wish to pay for the program before filing.
I wasted an hour and half of my life on the phone with turbo tax and they still couldn't fix the problem. Form IT-229 shows up but doesn't populate on line 71 of IT-201. They were so not willing to help (even supervisors) that I had to request a refund. I have done my taxes with them for almost 10 years!
@aliane1 @Well that’s not good. The only reason I want to use them is because I’ve been doing taxes with them for 9 years and all my info is in there
@aliane1 @ULSTERCAZ. When you prepared your state return in Turbo Tax, did you go the section entitled Take a look at New York credits and taxes and then to your home>Real Property Tax Relief Credit (IT-229)?
Then did you complete all the questions and after all the questions were complete, did the program inform you that you qualified for the credit?
@DaveF1006 @Yes, after completing the section for IT-229 turbo tax informed me that I was receiving a credit for $287 however the amount of my NY return reduced by $17 rather than increasing by $287
@ULSTERCAZ Ok, I just wanted to verify that you completed this step. My suggestion is still to view the IT-229 to see if there is a credit listed then look at line 71 on the IT-201 by whatever means necessary. If everything still appears blank, then it may need to be escalated to our CSI team but first, they want to make sure that all other steps are completed first before the escalation.
@DaveF1006 @Thanks for the advice. Ill
work on this tomorrow and update here with any progress.
so after speaking with TurboTax there seems to be no solution. The IT-229 form does complete and the credit is detailed on IT-229. The issue seems to be that the credit is detailed on line 12 of IT-201-ATT before moving to line 71 of IT-201. TurboTax is not supporting IT-201-ATT therefore the credit does not reach the final return.
the funny thing is if you enter the section >other tax credits>refundable credits the projected refund does increase to the correct amount but then it doesn’t support this section so you have to go back and the projected refund falls again.
Thank you. This is so exhausting that a tax company doesn't support this credit. Now think of all the other New Yorkers that will be due this credit and not able to file through turbo tax. Did you get a refund?
@aliane1 I hadn’t paid them anything yet. I told them I’d be filing with H&R Block on Monday and they said sorry they couldn’t help 🤦🏼♂️
mum sure there are people who will be due this credit and file with turbo tax without knowing they are not getting the money.
