Massachusetts Nonresident question

I worked in Massachusetts for five months last year while living in New Hampshire, then moved to Maine and started working in Maine. Should I be apportioning my wages for my MA taxes, and if so, how do I do it?

I have 3 W2s, one in Mass and two in Maine. Do I separate it by working days? Do I select "Other" on the two Maine W2s and 100% Mass income on the Mass W2? Am I supposed to do this entirely differently? Whatever I do doesn't seem to be working.

You need to file a Massachusetts nonresident return.  You will repot the Massachusetts income for the work you did in Massachusetts so just the one W2.  Then you will file a part-year return for Maine and allocate the two Maine W2s to Maine.

Massachusetts Nonresident question

Yes, I am trying to file a Massachusetts nonresident return. It asks if I want to apportion my wages. When I say no, it tells me to confirm the wages I made outside of Massachusetts, but the amount listed is the wage from all three W2s. When I correct it and go through the next few steps, it ends up saying, "Since your total income from your federal return of $--- exceeds your MA and non-MA income on your Massachusetts return of $--- by more than 10%, the state requires an explanation of the difference." And if I say yes to apportioning wages, all three of my W2s are coming up and I cannot figure out how to only allocate the MA W2 to the MA nonresident return.

I would like to take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the directions below:

TurboTax Online:

  1. Sign into your online account.
  2. Locate the Tax Tools on the left-hand side of the screen.
  3. A drop-down will appear. Select Tools
  4. On the pop-up screen, click on “Share my file with agent.”
  5. This will generate a message that a diagnostic file gets sanitized and transmitted to us.
  6. Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.

TurboTax Desktop/Download Versions:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Click the Online tab in the black bar across the top of TurboTax and select “Send Tax File to Agent” *
  3. This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created.  Click on OK and the tax file will be sanitized and transmitted to us.
  4. Please provide the Token Number  (including the dash) that was generated in the response.

*(If using a MAC, go to the menu at the top of the screen, select Help, then, “Send Tax File to Agent”)
