How to amend state and not federal??

Hi,

I am trying to help my son with 2020 taxes Home & Business. He filed single he had some self employment income, no 1099. I guess turbotax just for state, not federal added a EITC. They sent a notice questioning this credit. I want to just remove this credit and file an amendment. However, turbotax will not let me remove the credit. I keep trying to delete the form, and it just keeps adding it back at review. Also, it keeps forcing me to answer questions on what changed with federal, but I dont want to change anything on federal. How can I do this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Terri

Is your son your dependent?  What state and what are they questioning?

Not a dependent. He is filing his own taxes single, no dependents with self employment income. He does not have 1099 either.  Its California and the Franchise Tax Board sent a notice asking for more information questioning his eligibility for the EITC or YCTC. Its easier just to take off that credit, but Turbotax is not letting me. It also seems like Turbotax is forcing me to give a reason why I am amending the federal, but I dont want that either. Not sure what to do.

"Not sure what to do"

Given that you don't want to amend the Federal tax return, do not print and send 1040-X to the IRS.

I wasn't planning to. The main issue is that I cant remove the EITC from the state return.

Sounds like he is qualified for the EIC according to TurboTax but the state is checking that he has legitimate earned income from his self employment. Why not verify that by giving the state the information it needs or alternatively tell the state you do not have the documentation that it needs in which case it will just deny the EIC?
