Can I attach a copy of my West Virginia Prepaid Tuition (Smart529) annual statement to my West Virginia tax filing?

Schedule M, Line 37 of Form IT-140 indicates that I need to attach my Annual Statement; however, TurboTax does not prompt me to so do.

If the state instructions require you to attach your annual statement, you will need to print and mail your state return that includes a copy of the Annual Statement. You may choose to electronically file your federal return but will need to print and mail your state return. Turbo Tax will supply you with complete instructions on how to print and mail your West Virginia State return.

I have also tried to electronically file the WV return, had it rejected for lack of Smart 529 documentation, and now have to file by postal mail.

When i print the WV for postal mailing, the T.T. instructions do not mention the fact that I should attach a copy of the Smart 529 statement... you need to fix that!      (Your instructions do correctly mention that you have to attach a copy of the statement for Long Term Care insurance.  The Smart 529 procedure is exactly analagous to the the Long Term Care procedure.)

I paid T.T. $25 for the electronic filing of my WV return, when T.T. should have realized that electronically filing that return was impossible (with the current T.T. software).   I should receive a refund of that $25.  I wonder how many other people across WV are falling into that same "Smart 529" trap and losing their $25 payments?

I am in this same boat.  However, it ALMOST looks like there is a functioning way to attach it now. There is now a section for pdf uploads in the WV return preparation. Inside that I found the place for prepaid tuition plans to be uploaded and when I clicked the "get pdf" button it let me navigate to the pdf saved on my hard drive and click Open, and then it looked like it uploaded the SMART529 pdf (it shows the path to the pdf on my computer) but I don't get a button to confirm it after that.  I just press continue, which pops me out of the pdf upload dialog, presumably having uploaded it. However, when I get ready to efile and print my returns, I don't see that pdf attached to the files that will presumably be transmitted.  Do you have any light you can shed on this?  It seems so close!

TurboTax does not  allow upload of general pdf forms.  There are some uploads allowed for tax files from prior year etc.

I suggest you print and mail your West Virginia return with the attachment.  When you select Print to Mail only the documents needed will be printed.
