Hi!
I lived in NY from Jan to Aug 2021 and move to NJ in Sep 2021. I worked for a company that is located in NY for the entire year.
On my W2, my NY state wage is my entire year wage and they withhold the entire year NY state tax. There's a NJ state wage on my W2 but no NJ state tax was withheld on my W2.
I know I am part-year resident of both states and how should I file the state tax? Can I claim credit from NJ?

File a part-year resident return for each state.
Since you worked all year in NY, your entire year's wages are taxable by NY.
NJ can tax all the income you earned after you became a resident of NJ. You can claim a credit on your NJ return, but only for the portion of NY taxes paid after your move.
You will file a Part-Year New York and Part-Year New Jersey (which is really a NJ Resident return showing income for the part of the year that you lived there). Since you worked in New York, you will report the January to August 2021 income and then the September to end of year income as nonresident NY state source income. On your NJ return, you will report the September to December income, and claim a credit for taxes paid to another state based on the taxes you paid on that specific income.
NOTE: You will want to complete the New York tax return first.
Thank you!
Do you know where I can find the value of the taxes paid to NY?
I don't understand what is 'taxes you paid on that specific income'
Based on my situation described above, in the below attachment of NY state tax form, should the federal amount be the same as the new york state amount?
Yes.
Thanks a lot!
When you mentioned 'You can claim a credit on your NJ return, but only for the portion of NY taxes paid after your move.' How do I know what is the portion of NY taxes paid after my move? How can I calculate the income and tax?
