Out of state filing a MI tax return. My W2 has MI tax withheld (17). The MI form does not have a field to enter the tax withheld. I need to deduct withheld from taxes.

I'm an out of state resident, filing a MI tax return for income earned based on the nights I've stayed during business travel during travel.  My employer has withheld MI tax on my W2 (box 17).  The MI TurboTax form has calculated that I need to pay MI tax, but there is no field to report the tax already with held.  I need help reporting the tax withheld, so it is applied against the taxes required.

Thank you.

When you enter your W-2 in the Federal section, TurboTax will transfer this information to your Michigan tax return. When you are in the Michigan tax return, you can view the Michigan tax summary to verify that the withheld taxes have been reported. (Click the screenshots below for reference.) Note: You will be prompted to enter the payer's employer identification number (EIN) during the Michigan tax interview if you didn't enter it on the W-2 screen.

To view the Michigan Tax Summary:

  • Continue working on your return in TurboTax Online. (If your return isn't open, you'll need to sign in and click Take me to my return.)
  • Click the State tab (left side of your screen).
  • Click Continue when TurboTax displays Let's get your state taxes done right.
  • If you haven't already added the Michigan return, do so now. Otherwise, click Edit for the Michigan return.
  • Click Tax Tools (lower left side of your screen).
  • Select Tools.
  • In the pop-up window, select View Tax Summary.
  • TurboTax will display a Summary of Your Michigan Taxes. Locate the entry for "Michigan Tax Withheld" to verify it was transferred from the W-2 section of TurboTax.
