On my 1040 form line 35a has the amount of my state tax return rather than the federal tax return. Is this normal?

what is on Line 34? THAT was your total refund.

What is on line 36?

you would have entered what appears on Line 35a during the interview process so while it is not normal, if you inadvertantly responded that you only wanted part of your rfund sent to you, it would certainly be "normal"

Your federal Form 1040 has nothing whatsoever to do with your state tax return or state refund, so you might just be looking at a pure coincidence.

Federal and state tax returns go to completely separate taxing authorities.
