Ohio State tax form is not correctly taking part time residency income its taxing almost the full amount of income between what was earned in Ohio & Florida. Please help

HI! I am doing my son's taxes. He graduated fr OSU in May and took a job in Florida. Total income reported is $31925. Only $5760.was earned in OH. The OH state return is caluculated $25700. I read some of the reply's w/ similar issues - but I need help getting in to the w-2 form. That w-2 form was downloaded. Please advise me how to only have $570. taxed in Ohio. Thank you

You will want to indicate that he was a PART YEAR RESIDENT of Florida- then you will be able to indicate which amounts were earned in Ohio.  Look for the page below.

regardless of answer non-resident or part time resident the state of ohio does not ask me to allocate the ohio income amount.  It keeps telling me the ohio income is the federal income.  3 w2s.  two in florida and one in ohio for 1/1/2022 - 6/16/2022.  i've tried every combination and even changing the direct forms but it keeps showing all income and taxes due to ohio.  Only earned 6300 in ohio out of 31,000

It sounds as if Ohio is not allocating your income properly, to only tax that income sourced in Ohio.

First, please check My Info in the Federal return and be sure your mailing address is listed as your Florida address, you have selected Florida in the drop down box, and the box is checked for Made money in another state.

  1. Next, go to the States section and click on the delete trashcan icon for Ohio
  2. Then, add Ohio back and be sure it is creating a Part Year Resident return (it will refresh data from the federal return)
  3. It should then show your federal income and ask you to allocate what is sourced in Ohio
  4. You will not need to file a return in Florida, since it is one of the states with no individual income tax
