NY State Tax Filing for under 18 dependent child

I am a 16 year old dependent child with an income that does not exceed $6000. I do not have to file a federal tax return, but do I need to file a NY state tax return? I am having trouble finding the answer, please help!

Yes, if you have income of more than $3,100 you will need to file a NY return.

What kind of income did you have?  Did you get a W2 or a 1099NEC for it?  If they took any tax withholding out of the W2 in box 2 you can file federal to get that back.  If you got a 1099NEC you have to file a federal return no matter how small the amount.

My income was $5733.75. I have a W-2, but boxes 1 and 2 are blank. I do not have a  1099NEC.

What type of income was this that boxes 1 and 2 are blank?  Did you have a job?

I do not understand how I fill it out.

I did have a job. On my W-2 box one and two were blank. Box one: wages, tips, other comp. And, box two: federal income tax withheld.

Generally, you would enter it in the W-2 section.  However, do you know why box 1 and 2 are blank?  What type of employment did you have?

What boxes are filled out?

I am not sure why the boxes are blank. I worked in a warehouse during the summer, on weekends, and during school recess. But I am at high school full time.

Boxes 3,4,5,6,14,15, and 27 are filled out on my W-2.

You will need to enter the w2 in the federal section. Go ahead and use the state wages for box 1 wages just so you can get through the program. Once you get through your fake federal, you can fill out the NY return.

Be sure to select that you will paper mail the federal return. Then don't mail it.

Select to e-file the NY return and file it.
