Nonresident NY/Resident NJ State Box 16 Question

Hi all,

I work in New York and living in New Jersey. I don't have any withholdings for New Jersey. Just finished Federal and New York and due for refunds. I'm going through the New Jersey portion now. I'm at the question "Let's Confirm Your Taxable State Wages from..." and it lists NY and NJ state wages and can check the boxes for both to remove. When I check to remove either or both, it's showing that I'm due for a New Jersey refund, e.g. over $10,000. Historically, I have paid New Jersey for every years filings. I'm confused why I'm getting this amount (a large amount too) from New Jersey for this year's filing.

Not sure if TurboTax misread my W-2 but  there are two NY sections, one for Federal, and one for NJ. All sections have box 16 with wages. Not sure if this has anything to do with it and not sure how to go about this. Any guidance is much appreciated.

Thank you

Nonresident NY/Resident NJ State Box 16 Question

Your answer is on page 3 of the NJ-1040, Specifically lines 42 to 55 (well, the later lines might make a difference, but I imagine that these lines are the important ones).

I would dig out your 2023 NJ-1040 and compare page 3s to see where the big difference is.

Then come back to us to talk about it.

Nonresident NY/Resident NJ State Box 16 Question

Yes - I see that Step by Step thought I had some NJ withholdings for line 55 which I do not. I'm going to override the Tax Payments Worksheets form and enter in 0 for line 9.

Thank you very much for the helpful guidance.

Double-check the NJ line of your W-2 to ensure that there aren't any withholdings reported there.
