Non-Resident Student in MA

As a full-time out-of-state student, I worked as a part-time temporary worker in Massachusetts. When filling out my on-boarding tax documents, I checked yes for "Check if you are a full-time student engaged in seasonal, part-time or temporary employment whose estimated annual income will not exceed $8,000." because I did not expect to make over $8,000.

However, I recently realized I actually did make just over the $8,000 cap. What do I need to do in order to fix this and correctly file my return?

$8000 is the income threshold above which a Massachusetts non-resident must file a non-resident MA tax return.  So all you have to do is file a non-resident MA return in addition to your return in your home state.

In TurboTax, be sure to complete your non-resident state return before you do your home state return, so that you receive credit on your home return for taxes paid to the non-resident state.

@TomD8 Thanks for the reply! Just to clarify -- I need to file a tax return in my home state (FL) even if I did not work there?

No - Florida does not have an income tax.  So MA is the only state tax return you'll need to file.

In the personal info section of TT, enter FL as your state of residence and indicate that you had other state income from MA.  That will prompt TT to generate the correct tax forms.
