After you go through the adjustments in the state return, you will be given the option to choose which deduction you want. TurboTax will default to the highest deduction. A taxpayer may deduct either the North Carolina standard deduction or North Carolina itemized deductions without regard to which deduction was claimed on the federal return. However, the North Carolina standard deduction is zero for the following taxpayers:
• The taxpayer is Married Filing Separately for federal purposes and his or her spouse itemizes,
• The taxpayer is a nonresident alien, or
• The taxpayer is filing a short-year return because of a change in the accounting period.
Is there an option when I'm working on NC State return to choose itemized deductions without going back to the Federal return and "undoing" the standard deduction on the Federal return? If so, where is that option and how do I get to it? I don't want to undo the standard deduction on Federal.
Dawn's answer refers to a choice you make in the North Carolina interview, and does not require you going back to the federal interview.
Where exactly is that choice available in the North Carolina interview? I do not recall seeing that option when I was working on my NC return. Thanks for your help!
I found the "option" on the information worksheet. It's not really obvious unless you read closely in the section regarding filing separately from your spouse. Would be nice to have it separated in the instructions so it is clearer. Thanks again for your help!
