Question

MO-NRI

In 2021, I lived in Missouri through July, then moved to Illinois for the remainder of the year.

I made all of my money for the year in Missouri (other than a relatively negligible amount from interest on a high APY savings account, about $40). I filed my taxes several weeks ago, then received an email from TurboTax that my MO-NRI form is now available. I have no idea what, if anything, I need to do with it. I have already received my federal and MO refunds, and the refund is listed as being complete in TurboTax.

It seems like my obligations have been fulfilled, but also feels weird since I just received this new form. Does anybody have any guidance?

Because you lived in Missouri and Illinois in 2021, you would file a Part-Year return for each state.  Missouri does not have a Part-Year return but allows you to file as a Resident or Nonresident.  The MO-NRI was not ready a few weeks ago, so if you filed as a MO Resident you are receiving this notice now because TurboTax may not have a way to differentiate the Resident or Nonresident status.

Regardless, I recommend go to the Missouri State Department of Revenue website at Obtaining the status of your tax return to be sure you filed.

Yes — this says my return is complete (which it is, as I have my state refund in my bank account). However, does this mean I do not have to do anything else? Does it mean my FILING is complete? (I.e. does this mean I am legally compliant with my taxes?)

Thank you for your help!

If you filed as a MO resident, you are done! If you filed as a MO nonresident, please verify your forms are accurate and that an amended return is not necessary. You should:

  1. save your original filing before doing anything
  2. view your MO return
  • if it is resident, you are done.
  • if if says non-resident, then you need to continue
    1. Log back into your tax return
    2. did the MO refund change?
      • If no, great, done
      • If yes, you may need to file an amended return. Take a look through the forms and compare them to the original.
