Major purchase sales tax deduction - Texas

To determine the sales tax deduction in TurboTax, the program requires entry of the total combined sales tax rate (state plus local rates).

My area in Texas is 6.25% for state and 2.0% for local for a total rate of 8.25%.

Only the state amount of 6.25% is collected on large purchases in Texas (in my case, a new boat and vehicle were both purchased in 2022).

How do I enter the information for the large purchases made at 6.25% as well as have the program configure the estimated sales taxes paid at 8.25% for general purchases also made in 2022??

Enter the sales tax on your boat in the major purchases section of the sales tax section instead of the regular sales tax entry screens.

Here's how to enter the sales tax you paid:

  1. With your tax return open in TurboTax, search for sales tax and then select the Jump to link in the search results
  2. On the Sales Tax and Income Tax screen, select Continue with Sales Tax
    • In the CD/download software, the screen name will be Let's Compare Your Sales Tax and Income Tax – select Try Sales Tax
  3. When asked how you want to enter your sales tax, select EasyGuide
  4. Answer the questions on the next few screens. When you get to the Major Purchases screen, answer Yes
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to enter your info
