income reported twice

I work in New York but reside in New Jersey.  I first prepared my Federal return and then my New York state return. When I try to prepare my New Jersey tax return, it picks up what portion of my wages are taxable for New Jersey and also what portion is taxable for New York. There is a slight difference between the two because New York has some deductions not permitted in New Jersey. As a result of picking up both, my total income is being reported as almost double what my actual total income is. How do I get turbo tax to only pick up my taxable wage income for New Jersey?

For your Resident Return to New Jersey, you report your Total Income and then get 'Credit for Tax Paid to Other States'.

Prepare your Non-Resident New York return first, then your Resident NJ return.
