I moved from NYC to another NY county on February 1st. I continued to work for same NYC employer through October 31. How do I allocate total pay including January bonus?

You only have to pay New York City tax on money earned while your lived in one of the five boroughs.

Your local wages (W-2, Box 18) should be smaller than your state wages (W-2, Box 16). Box 18 should be the amount you made as a NY resident.

TurboTax will move both amounts to your state return. To check or check the NYC amount:

  1. Go to Your City Residency Information
  2. Select Edit on About You
  3. Select Part-year resident on New York City Residency Information for You
  4. Enter dates for your Part-year Residency Period
  5. Skip Yonkers
  6. Edit your job on Your Wages Summary
  7. Change the amount on Wages Information to Wages Earned while living in NYC
  8. On Your New York City Wages, select Earned 100% as resident if you made an adjustment on the previous screen to show NYC-only wages

Thank you, to clarify the allocation:

Should total pay be allocated pro-rata based on time spent as resident of NYC , i.e.

(total annual pay * 1/10 months) to NYC, and

(total annual pay * 9/10 months) to the other county?

Or should all of the bonus be allocated to NYC if received in January?

Does Turbotax automatically generate form IT-360.1 (Change of City Resident status) as part of state tax filing?

Yes, allocate you pay pro-rata based on time spent as a resident of NYC. Your bonus is probably all NYC if it was based on work performed in 2020 since you  lived in NYC in 2020. If it were a future bonus (e.g. a signing bonus, it would be pro-rata).

This references to state non-residency, but it works the same: NONRESIDENT ALLOCATION RULES

TurboTax will automatically generate IT-360.1 based on your answers.
