I moved a year and a half ago. My employer never updated my new address. Do I still file two state returns? I did that last year already.

I moved states in Dec 2023, so when I filed in April 2024 for the 2023 year, I filed state returns in both state A and B. I don't recall if they were both part year resident returns, but I believe state B was part year.

I stayed with my employer until July 2024, but they never updated my resident address to the new state (B), so it still shows state A on my W2, and I was paying state A taxes. Do I file my state tax returns again as a part year resident for both state A and B? Or should I only file full year resident in state B?

No.  You will file a resident tax return for the state that you live in and a non-resident return for the state that shows withholding on your W-2.

If you've already entered your personal information, review your entries to help ensure that TurboTax will help you create the correct state tax returns.

  1. Launch Turbo Tax and select My Info
  2. Personal profile summary screen will pop up
  3. Select Revisit by your address
  4. Scroll through the screens to ensure that you have the correct answers for your state of residence.
  5. Scroll down to Other State Income and select Edit
  6. Check your answer for Did you make money in any other states? Answer Yes and make sure you select the state in the drop-down menu.

After you complete your federal tax return and you move to the State Taxes section, both your nonresident and resident state returns will be listed.

For additional information, refer to the TurboTax Help articles Do I have to file tax returns in more than one state?,  Why would I have to file a nonresident state return? and How do I file a nonresident state return?
