It would be helpful to tell us which states, but usually if you do the nonresident state return FIRST, then the resident state next, the return for the resident state will credit you for any non-resident state tax you paid on the income claimed on both returns so you are not double-taxed.

Thank you for responding.

NC as Non-resident, Va state of residence.   Sorry I didn't think it mattered as it seems to be a hick-up in the Turbo Tax software.    In my federal section, I entered the w-2 with both states listed including the tax paid.   If I fill out box 16 for NC, and Va, then NC state tax section thinks I made double.   I did NC first as state taxed.  I will go back and swap them on the w-2 page to see if that makes a difference.

I re-tried entering 0 as block 16 as that is what the w-2 says.  It worked the second time.

I tried that, I think.  When I clicked on the State Returns for both Alabama and Mississippi, Turbo Tax automatically calculated the refunds.   My refund from Alabama was on $208 but had $1,136.18.  How do I get my whole refund from Alabama since I was a full year resident of Mississippi for 2024?

If you lived in Mississippi but worked in Alabama, you need to file Alabama non-resident return. Nonresidents must file a return if their Alabama income exceeds the allowable prorated personal exemption.

You will also file Mississippi resident return and claim income from all sources. AS a resident of Mississippi who earns income in another state and is required to pay an income tax to that other state, you are allowed to take a credit against your Mississippi income tax due in the same year for the total income tax due to the other state.

For accurate calculation, prepare your non-resident return first.
