I don't think I meet the residency requirements of any state I was in this year. What do I tell the IRS?

I lived in Minnesota for 135 days, New York for 103, and Michigan for 54. The rest of the time I was traveling. My parents own a home in Minnesota that I stayed at while I was there. What do I put under 'state of residence'?

*Edit: I just realized Form 1040 doesn't actually ask for a state of residence. It asks for an address, and I can just put the address I have on my W-2s. But TurboTax does ask for a state. Why is that, and what should I enter?

I am assuming you are in the My Information section. This address would be for mailing purposes only if the IRS needed to contact you.

As far as determining your state of residency for tax purposes, each state has their own rules. After making this determination you would choose your state (s) of residency for the year also in the "My Information" section see the example below.

- Tell us the state(s) you lived in
- State of residence (on December 31, 2017
- Select your state from the drop down
- I lived in another state in 2017, answer Yes or No
- Previous state of residence (where you lived before moving) (choose from the drop down)
- Date you became a resident of (state)

Please see TurboTax FAQ - What is my state residency status?
