Dear TurboTax Community,
In 2024, my partner earned $750 for consulting work with the National Institute of Health (NIH). That consulting job was performed while she is physically in California, and both of us lived in California for the entire year and never visited Maryland. Based on my understanding, this $750 income is not Maryland-source income, and therefore we are not required to file a Maryland state tax return.
Because I believed a Maryland return wasn't necessary, my original filing included only a Federal and California tax return. However, while amending my California return, TurboTax is now forcing me to file a Maryland state return, maybe because I entered Maryland before and selected “nonresident.” Now I want to remove Maryland state return, and here’s what I’ve tried:
I went to the “Your State Returns” page. I clicked “Edit”, and then clicked “Remove” next to “Maryland". But when I do that, the “Continue” button becomes grayed out, and I can’t move forward unless I keep Maryland included.
I believe this has also affected parts of my amended California return.
My questions are:
Given our situation, are we actually required to file a Maryland state return?
If not, how can I properly remove Maryland from my amended return in TurboTax?
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Best regards,

As long as there were no Maryland taxes withheld, then the Maryland return is not required since the work was not performed in Maryland.
Try going to the menu at the top of the screen and choose File > Remove State Return to remove the Maryland return from your tax file.
Dear AnnetteB6,
Thank you for your reply.
Unfortunately, I’m still running into issues.
I was able to remove the Maryland return using the menu option File > Remove State Return, and initially, it appeared to work:
On the “Your State Returns” page, only California is listed—Maryland is no longer shown.
In the Forms view (accessed from the top right corner), the Maryland forms are gone, and only the federal and California forms remain.
However, during the “Review” stage, I hit a strange problem. After the message “Nicely done! Just 3 things to go” appears, Step 1 is to “Save your amended returns.” Once I do that and generate the PDF:
The PDF only includes the Maryland return
The amended California return is missing
This suggests that removing Maryland earlier somehow affected the structure of the amended return.
Oddly enough, things seem to display correctly if I skip the Review stage entirely and go straight to the File stage, where only the federal and California returns appear to be included.
Could you please advise on how to proceed?
Is there a way to fix the error during the Review stage?
Or is it safe to skip the Review stage and go straight to File, as long as I carefully review the final PDF and confirm the correct forms are included?
Thanks so much for your help! I am using the Turbotax Deluxe Windows version.
I cannot explain the situation you are experiencing or offer a solution to overcome it. If you are planning to file the amended returns by mail, skip the Review stage and print the returns to be mailed. And, of course, review them to be sure that the amended return is reporting the changes that you made.
