Graduate Student Residency Questions

I am a graduate student in the state of Iowa.  I worked and made money as an undergraduate student in Iowa from January-May of 2024, and then as a graduate student in Iowa from August-December of 2024.  However, I am originally from Indiana and spent some (not more than 2 total months) of time there throughout the year.

Since I am living and working in Iowa (but have not applied for residency in Iowa), do I have to file state taxes as a nonresident of Iowa and as a resident of Indiana, or am I allowed to not file taxes in Indiana because I don't physically live there the majority of the year/work there?

You can file as a non-resident in Iowa if you plan to return to Indiana when you are done with your school work. You do have to file a state tax return there since you worked there.
